I have a pretty cool story about this wave, this day, and this man.
This was the day his brother @bruceirons_ actually won the “Eddie Aikau.” I remember paddling out in the dark that morning before the contest with Bruce, Andy, @shanedorian, @makuarothman and @sunnygarcia and it was about as big as it gets and absolutely perfect. Crowded too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen #WaimeaBay that crowded to be honest.
We were all fortunate to get some bombs except for Andy and before we knew it water patrol was kicking us out of the water for the start of the contest. By this time Andy was really pissed at himself for not catching one. With time running out we caught a smaller inside wave together to get back to the beach. On the way in and on the beach he kept asking me if he was a kook.
I remember telling him that “you are definitely not a kook. Actually I’m pretty sure you are the best surfer in the world.” That’s one of the greatest things about Andy. He would always second guess himself, like most humans do, but as soon as he could he would step it up and prove to himself that he could whatever he set his mind to do. In pretty sure he got the first perfect score of the contest on this wave.
The craziest and most beautiful thing about Andy’s surfing was that you never knew what he was going to next. But but neither did he. That’s why he was the best. He never followed he always blazed the trail. The most beautiful thing about Andy as a person was the love and passion he had for his family and his friends.
Miss you and love you brother.
